The Q9m’s keyboard is the biggest change from the old Motorola Q. The larger, rectangular keys are easier to settle your fingers on (which helps prevent mistyping), and they depress with satisfying clicks. All but the most ham-handed will fl y over this smartphone's keyboard.

A superior phone, the Q9m has very strong reception. The earpiece and especially the speakerphone are unusually loud and clear, and ringtones sound terrific.

Verizon has updated the Q9m with a lot of useful new software. At the head of the pack is DataViz DocumentsToGo for Windows Mobile 6, which lets you view PDFs and view, edit, and create Microsoft Offi ce documents. Also, it’s Word-, Excel-, and PowerPoint-compatible apps are refreshing oases of cutting and pasting. Verizon’s new media-player home screen is less accommodating, but you don’t have to use it.

The Q9m’s one problem is that it feels a bit laggy. When typing an e-mail message, I sometimes had to wait for the screen to catch up with my typing, and PDF files took quite some time to open. Still, the new Q is a powerful, flexible mobile office.

Motorola RAZR²: The RAZR² Cuts Four Ways

Sanyo Katana II: Not Quite Cutting-Edge

LG Chocolate VX8550: Richer, Smoother Mobile Music

Beneath the almost identical cases, you'll find three different handholds using various cellular technologies. The V8 model for T-Mobile is based on a GSM platform: the V9 model for AT&T is built around WCDMA; and the V9m for the other guys relies on CDMA EV-DO. These distinctions affect everything from call quality (best on AT&T) to battery life (worst on AT&T by a long shot: 3.5 hours as opposed to nearly 5 on other models). T-Mobile’s V8 runs a Linux-based OS, while all the other models use Motorola's older Synergy platform.

Alltel, Sprint, and Verizon may have all picked the same hardware, but they've slapped very different software into their phones. It's kind of like getting three identical Dell PCs, but one is running XP, one Vista, and one Linux. The user experiences are dramatically different. Alltel’s UI, for example, is the fastest. Sprint has a great live streaming-video experience and is open to third party applications. Verizon's phone, by contrast, is saddled with a depressingly low-end, if easy-to-use, set of text menus.

Motorola gave all of the carriers a luxurious metal-and-glass design with a decent 240- or 500-MHz processor, aided by 100MB of onboard memory support for 2GB (though not 4GB) microSD memory cards, a 2-megapixel camera, and the biggest, most beautiful external screen I've ever seen on a flip phone. Sadly, every single carrier missed the opportunity to use the jaw-dropping display to its fullest extent.

Only Sprint lets you play video on the phone's external screen. Only Alltel allows you tarred text messages on it, while Sprint and Verizon let you use the display to trigger the camera. AT&T’s RAZR2 software in general, however, is a sad list of missed chances. There’s no video sharing and no Napster/Yahoo! DRM’d music-and the carrier dedicates in entire hard button to its lousy "cellular video" service that absolutely no one use.

In AT&T's defense, there's one triumph on its model (and on the T-Mobile model, too, which I didn't get to test): CrystalTalk. Everyone knows that cell-phone talk quality needs help, and Motorola is the first company in ages to step up to the mic, as it were, with a remedy. CrystalTalk uses the phone's microphone to monitor for surrounding noise, dynamically equalizing of the sound in the earpiece and altering its volume to punch through the rumble as best possible. Meanwhile, it pumps up your voice and tunes down the background noise in the phone's mic, so the person you're talking to hears more you and less din.

CrystalTalk works brilliantly, and the V9 is the best phone I've ever heard in terms of handling background noise. Yet CrystalTalk isn't available on the V9m models for Alltel, Sprint, or Verizon. Motorola says that's because those models already sound good enough-and yes, the Vcrizon model does sound very nice. But more noise cancellation would still be welcome.

Of course, every one of these RAZR's has its own music player with its own separate strengths. Verizon's player, for instance, is the best for basic Windows Media users, while Alltel's is perfect for experts and iTunes lovers. The carriers have their own opinion about Web browsers as well. AT&T includes the divine Opera software, and Sprint comes in second with Obigo, a real but basic browser. Alltel and Verizon unfortunately remain mired in the swamp of inefficient WAP browsers to view Web pages. E-mail options vary as well. E-mail communication is free and built in with AT&T, for-pay on Alltel and Verizon, and not even an option with Sprint. Each of these phones also takes a different approach to running third-party software. Sprint lets you run third-party java applications (though Opera Mini crashed on my test phone) white Alltel, AT&T, and Verizon all lock down their devices to different extends against programs not purchased through them.

All four models, in theory, also work as high-speed USB modems for your PC. I clocked mediocre speeds on the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon handsets-generally 500 to 600 Kbps on networks where I'm used to 700- to 800-Kbps download speeds. Verizon's, however, was the only one that came with the right random drivers, and it worked flawlessly with a USB connection.

What does this all mean? Well, in a nutshell, the RAZR² is generally the best midrange phone offered on any given carrier, as long as price is no object. You can find phones with similar specs, but not the gorgeous design, for less. The RAZR² puts Motorola back in the game in a big way, and it will be in many U.S. callers' hands this fall.

LG Chocolate VX8550: Richer, Smoother Mobile Music

Sony Ericsson W580i: Music Phone Comes With Sporty

Call quality is good, and like other Sanyo phones the Katana II gets quite loud, although, like the original Katana, it tends to distort voices somewhat when played at top volumes. Unfortunately, ringtones are limited to scratchy, low-quality MP3- esque purchased ringtones. Reception for phone calls is fine, though not quite as solid as on my beloved Sanyo SCP-8400. Also, rural users be advised: Sprint has removed analog service from this Katana. Forget about fancy features, too. There's just a novelty-value-only VGA camera and a pretty good Web browser provided by Access NetFront. Even so, the phone's 145-MRz ARM9 processor should provide relatively snappy gaming performance.

Sprint's Motorola RAZR,the V3m,is being sold for the same price and has a bunch more features. On the other hand, Sanyo’s reputation for voice quality is legendary, so I’m comfortable recommending the Katana II instead for folks looking for a thin, voice only phone.

As a phone, the Chocolate's RF reception is unobjectionable. The earpiece also gets plenty loud but distorts a bit when cranked up. Speakerphone volume is sufficient, even outdoors. Sound is just a touch harsh, and I wish the microphone transmitted a bit less background noise, but I’m being very picky. Chances are you won’t notice this.

You can play songs over wireless Bluetooth or regular wired headsets and even trigger music with a voice command. Besides 4GB memory cards, the phone supports a wide range of audio formats, including AAC (iTunes Plus, too), MP3, and WMA music, at up to 320 Kbps. You can sort tracks by album, artist, or genre, and navigate around with the handy scroll wheel. Disappointingly, both memory cards and a USB cable for transferring music over from your PC costs extra.

Still, if you were turned off by the balky navigation on the original Chocolate, give this sweeter version a try.

LG KU250: 3G for All, Great Feature for All

Nokia 7900 Prism: New Prism, New Technology

Not like the W880i and W200i model which seriously made for the youngster music lover. This new walkman series exactly aims to all people who love music and sport. The stylist designs dedicated to stylish people. The “Walkman” music player gives to the all music lovers. Last but not least is the sporty feature, as sport media and its user vitality watcher.

As alliance product which backed up by many great feature, fairly enough if W580i got more attention than others typical phone.

This Walkman series physical construction is the result of S500i constructed. Starts from the up folder to bottom part are identical with the S500i body.

The slider design and wrapped by plastic material, a typical of Walkman series, felt so frail and not solid. A color light is shines from its navigation button, Walkman logo and also from earpiece hole, one kind with key pad backlight. It’s seen more attractive and fresh. Moreover a dynamic light affect which shines from left and right body side. It’s similar with Siemens M55 and M65.

The line of its alphanumeric keypad it’s similar with S500i, a flat keypad with “diamond” divider between the buttons. The access from every character is soft and comfort. The difference, W580i planted direct button to the Walkman menu, and its loudspeaker not decorated by voice holes anymore.

For W580i user interface, it’s nothing different with the previous product. The screen still TFT with 262 thousand colors. The picture detail is 240 x 320 pixels (QVGA) with diagonal 2 inch width.

With little saturation and brightness color effect, the screen looks more smooth and sharp. Even times you use it under the sun. The presents of "Fitness" new menu become the main focus besides "Walkman" which is the real icon of Sony Ericsson music phone.

The 72 channel polyphonic quality is unquestionable. Format of mp3, wma, m4a, amr and midi file can be free paired as a ring tone, message tone and alarm sound. Moreover, the 3gp and mp4 video clip can be added as a video tone.

The sound quality of the Walkman is without doubt. The song played via loudspeaker heard so thunderous. It’s louder than W880i and W200. So also when the volume set to maximum level, the output voice still heard great. But in my opinion, Nokia 6110 Navigators still win if compared to the W580i.

Similar with other Walkman series, W580i also figures in equalizer with Mega Bass effect and Widening stereo. The result more felt if heard via headset stereo, which is available in sale package.

The "Shake Control" feature in W580i adds the new color of Sony Ericsson Walkman technology. You don’t have to enter to playlist for simply changing song, just shake the phone while push the Walkman shortcut button. The song will automatically change, with the vibration sign before.

"Fitness" features useful to control condition of body including daily activity. For example how many calories have been burned in a day, the distance gone through until your total step. Altogether rely on motion sensor, similar with music player "Shake Control". The result is directly calculated and can be displayed quickly. The unique, total step which has been gone through can be displayed in the phone screen with “shoe step" icon emerging in bottom left corner of screen.

For the camera, similar with W880i and W810i, W580i powered with 2 megapixel camera. The support facility refers to S500i model, minus autofocus, macro mode and flash lamp. The viewfinder is only having portrait mode, without landscape choices. Compare it to W610i which have been supported with two modes.

The W580i connection line its not complete if compared to W610i. There's only Bluetooth v2.0 and USB data cable. Happily, the W580i Bluetooth has supported A2DP (Advanced audio Distribution Profile), what enables the song from Walkman can be listened via Bluetooth headset.

The WAP 2.0 browser and NetFront and also supported by GSM quad band network, W580i ready to open WAP/WEB page with smooth and perfect. Even the display can refer to smart fit format. Mean, internet site can be organized for full screen display. Landscape mode thus other choice to browsing the Internet.

W580i has 12 MB internal memory. For alternative is available Memory Stick Micro (M2) card slot.

Many new things you can get from this phone. Besides the powerful Walkman Player, 2 Megapixel camera, additional memory slot and also complete entertainment feature such as Sporty feature (Fitness) and “Shake Control” technology.

“Different”, that is the first impression which shine from Sony Ericsson S500i. It’s because the S500i unusual slider. Shift construction from the slider unlike with "S" family concept which mostly have ‘swifel’ platform. Except the slider, at the bottom folder of S500i made with rather dent. Beside as sweetener, the dents represent the place of good quality speaker.

The quality of S500i screen equal with the ‘brother”, S700i. It’s using TFT (Thin of Transistor Film) technology. Looking so clear and soft on eyes.

You can variously personalize the appearance of S500i menu. If bored with matrix grid format, you can change as list form. MOTOROLA RIZR Z3: Great and Simple Cell phone

Blackberry 8830: Roam the Globe Connected

The Muziq syncs with Windows Media Player and lets you drag-and-drop AAC, MP3, and WMA music files onto the device via a USB cable. Sprint's own music store charges a reasonable 99 cents per song over the air, in case you can't wait until you get home to buy music. Once you have your music loaded, you can play it over Bluetooth, wired headphones, or even a nearby FM radio using the main keypad or the touch-sensitive buttons on the outside of the phone. Sprint's music-playing application is painfully basic, so although the Muziq supports 4GB memory cards, it's hard to find individual songs if you have more than 100 or so on board.

The Muziq also has an honest-to-goodness Web browser (though you can use Opera Mini if you like), a pretty good e-mail client with an attractive tabbed interface that alerts you when new messages arrive, and a mediocre 1.3-megapixel camera. As a phone, the Muziq is just okay, with good earpiece volume and not-so-great reception.

For $100 with contract, that’s a pretty good mix of features for users who want to go beyond basic voice calling.

The screen is easily readable in sunlight, and the handset's keys, although small, give pleasingly tactile cues. Reception and sound quality are spot-on, voice dialing is excellent, and the Z3 uses Motorola's new-style improved phone book. I'm also glad to report that voice dialing is provided by the superb, no-training-needed VoiceSignal suite. The 2MP Camera is also a pleasant surprise: It takes sharp, well-balanced pictures.

What's the downside? Well, a slow ARM7 processor makes for a poky user interface and applications (you'll never want to open the WAP browser). Third-party applications that try to access the Internet end up festooned with obnoxious prompts, as well. The Z3 has a very basic music player that's slow to load. This phone isn't for the cutting-edge crowd-users who want a handheld computer. But it's our Editor's Choice as a sensible T-Mobile voice phone offering a hint of multimedia.

The phone works in more than 100 countries (including all of Europe) by combining CDMA and GSM calling capabilities. You can use it as a PC modem as well. Of course, you'll pay high roaming rates outside the U.S., but Verizon softens the blow by providing 24-hour, global tech support.

Like all BlackBerry handhelds, the 8830's greatest strengths are stability and ease of use. The platform could use a wider software selection, though- especially the affordable Microsoft Office document editors. Still, the 8830 is the easiest, smoothest way to get your work done with Verizon Wireless.
Blackberry 8830: $199.99

As a phone, the VX8700 fits firmly into the good-but-not-great category. Reception is certainly acceptable, but a notch behind that of the redoubtable Motorola E815. The car piece is loud, but with a bit of noticeable distortion at the top volume.

The key feature that should attract folks who want more printable photos is the 2-megapixel camera, a step up from the 1.3MP models that run across most of Verizon's line. Its easy-to-use interface helps you take nice, clear; well-balanced if somewhat underexposed outdoors shots. Low-light shots, alas, suffered from blur caused by slow shutter speeds.

The VX8700 has all of the ingredients for a successful consumer phone. You get good-enough performance, great looks, and a camera that you'd actually want to take pictures with.

Ever since the LG first publicized the Prada, there has been a hurricane of hype nearby the phone. And the hype makes sense: not only is the phone slim and beautiful, it's also a touch screen phone comparable to the much-ballyhooed and yet-to-be-released Apple iPhone. Yet, I would've liked 3G support, and the touch screen interface isn't for everyone. If you simply must have the newest in fashion phones, the LG Prada fits the bill, but don't imagine doing a lot with it. To find ringtones and accessories for this phone, plus advice and tips on how to use it, check out our Cell phones ringtones, accessories, and help page.

Design

Simply put, the LG Prada is the essence of elegance and style. It fits the very description of a fashion phone, and is quite possibly one of the best-looking handsets I've ever seen. Decked out in a lightweight piano-black shell, the Prada has a simple design, with smooth rounded corners and a touch of silver adorning its sides. It looks like a tiny version of fancy plasma TV or a piece of high-class modern art. The phone is also amazingly compact at 2.13 inches wide by 3.89 inches tall by 0.47 inch deep and weighing in at a scant 3 ounces. Because it's so slim and lightweight, you will have no trouble slipping it into a jeans pocket or a small clutch purse for a night out on the town.

Speaking of the touch screen, you'll need to use it with your finger to navigate the phone, as the Prada does not arrive with a stylus. Texting messages were a little trickier, though, as the Prada does not present a virtual QWERTY keyboard; rather, you have to text messages with a virtual alphanumeric keypad just like on a normal phone. Under the display is the Send, Clear, and End/Power keys, which are a little hard to push because they're a little too skinny for our tastes. The left spine of the LG Prada is home to a charger/headset jack, a volume rocker, and a sound profile key, while the keyguard lock and the MP3/camera key are on the right spine. There's also a camera lens on the back, full with a self-portrait mirror and flash. The LG Prada has a MicroSD card slot, but it is inopportunely placed behind the battery of the phone.

Features

The Prada has a huge 1,000-entry phone book with room in each entry for four numbers, an e-mail address, and a memo. The LG Prada also supports MP3 ringtones if you wish to add your own. Other necessary attributes include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calculator, a world clock, a unit converter, and a calendar. Those looking for additional functionality will like the voice recorder, e-mail support, Bluetooth 2.0 support, a speakerphone, and an FM radio tuner.

The LG Prada does come with an excellent 2.0-megapixel camera with plenty of settings. You can take photos of up to 1600x1200 resolutions or all the way down to VGA mode at around 320x240 pixels. There's also a self-timer, three quality modes, four color effects, white balance settings, a choice of shutter sounds, and a multi shot mode. The Prada also has a built-in camcorder with two resolutions (128x96 and 176x144) with settings similar to that of the still camera. Photo quality was very fine overall, with sharp detail and distinct colors, though the low-light photos had a bit of gloomy look to them. Video quality was not as good, with a quite grainy quality to most of our clips.

I truly liked the design of Prada's music player on the LG. It is pretty basic in that you can only do so much with your music (like play, pause, fast forward, and repeat/shuffle your playlists), but we still liked its simple, minimalist interface. It supports MP3, WAV, AAC, AAC+, and AAC++ files, and you don't need any special software to get tunes into the phone. Simply attach the Prada as a USB Mass Storage device and drag and drop the songs over. We wish that the Prada had a 3.5mm headset jack instead of the proprietary port, however. The LG Prada also has a built-in video player that can playback MP4 files.

Performance

Call quality was superb, and callers reported little problem hearing us. We even managed to get through automated caller systems without a hitch. Speakerphone quality did not fare as well. Even though there was plenty of volume, calls sounded muffled and callers kept asking us to speak up. Audio quality of the music player was also pleasing. Bass sounded a little weak, and it won't fully replace a standalone music player, but it's good enough for a quick music fix. We would advise using a headset over the phone's speakers, as the headset provided superior sound quality. The LG Prada has a rated battery life of three hours of talk time and 12.5 days of standby time. Our tests revealed a decent talk time of 3 hours and 7 minutes.

There are already several smart-phones out there and iPAQ 510 doesn't have such nifty tools like Palm Treo's touch screen or Blackberry's scroll wheel. What it offers instead is a built in voice recognition system, which explains the "Voice Messenger" in its name. You want the iPAQ to take dictations for an email? Done. Then command it to send it to proper address.

Because it emphasizes on voice commands, HP's designers thought it unnecessary to equip the iPAQ 510 with a full keyboard-virtual or otherwise-and made do with a numeric keypad, which can be tedious and occasions where you do have to write email (such as when you're in really noisy venue like a sports bar or during an office meeting).

Also take note that dictated emails are saved and sent as audio attachments- a WAV file-which means the recipient also has to listen to it. Not as convenient as a text document but definitely cool.

The iPAQ 510 is also equipped with voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) capabilities and the latest Windows Mobile 6 operating system and works really fast on Wi-Fi.

Then there is the phone's stylish look: Black edges and keypad against a gray body with a 1.3-megapixel camera on the back side.

The other wow factor of the iPAQ 510 is that it can read aloud messages-either email or SMS- you have received. (Unfortunately you can't dictate SMS messages). These will be read by robotic female voice so make sure these are not from that hot chick you met last night or an irate girlfriend or your ever-doting mother.

More than 20 voice commands available on the iPAQ 510 offer customers hands-free operation. You can navigate through phone and calendar tasks and speak to starts applications. (It gets tricky, however, with hard-to-pronounce names, so when calling, say, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, just search for his number manually).
